Who I am vs. Who Iwas
Our Vision
For much of my life, I walked through darkness. My story did not begin with everything being easy. When I was only two years old, an accident took my left eye and changed my life forever.
Growing up with that loss was not always easy as I carried pain, anger, and resentment that I did not always know how to handle. I wondered why things happened the way they did and why I had to be different.
As life went on, those feelings followed me. There were times I felt like I did not belong or matter. I ran away from home, I lived on the road, and found myself in places where I felt forgotten and alone. But even in those places, God had not forgotten me.
There came a time in my life when I found myself locked up because of a mistake I had made. It was not because I was a bad person,
but because I had made bad choices and had to face the consequences.
While there, I reached a place where I felt completely broken. I questioned my worth and my family's love and if my life had any meaning. In that darkness, I began to pray and read God's Word and I cried out to Jesus.
That's where God reached me and I realized that Jesus was not waiting for me to become perfect before He loved me. He met me right where I was. He showed me that my past, my mistakes or my failures did not define me.
Jesus became my light in the darkness and it was there, I gave my life to Him, and for several years I walked closely with Him. He changed me and helped me to become a better husband, father, and a better man. He blessed me with a family, opportunities, work, and the ability to help others. I even started a small ministry in my own backyard because I wanted people to know the same hope that I had found.
- But somewhere along the way, I made a mistake that many people make. I started focusing more on the blessings than the One who gave them.
I began to think, "Look what I have accomplished." I forgot that everything good in my life came because God had blessed me. I slowly drifted away,
It was not that Jesus left me. It was that I stopped following Him.
Over time, things began falling apart. Our church changed and People we loved moved on. We eventually stopped attending. It was not because anyone at the church was perfect or because anyone had done something terrible.
But when I lost that connection and stopped staying close to God, I began losing my foundation. I tried to build my life with my own strength again. I invested my savings into a home, believing we were building a future. I put my heart, my work, and my resources into making a better life for my family.
Then things happened that were outside of my control, and we lost all of that. Other plans fell apart. The life I thought I had built began slipping away. For a while, I wondered why God allowed me to lose so much.
But now I see things differently. I did not lose Jesus because my life fell apart. My life began falling apart because I had lost sight of Jesus. And there is a difference. Because Jesus never loses sight of us.
Just like the son in the story Jesus told—the son who left his father, wasted what he had been given, and eventually found himself broken—God was still waiting. The son came home expecting judgment. Instead, he found forgiveness. And a Father who loved him. That is what Jesus has done for me and will do for you.
He has shown me that falling down does not mean the story is over. We can wander and still come home, fail and still be forgiven, we can walk through darkness and still find the Light.
That is why John’s words mean so much to me:
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
My scars, mistakes and failures are part of my story, but they are not my ending, because Jesus is the author of my redemption. I share this, not because I have lived a perfect life, but because I know what it is like to be lost and found, to fall and be lifted back up. And I know, The same Jesus who found me in my darkest moment is still reaching for anyone who feels lost today. His light still shines.
